The new Amazon Fire TV Omni and 4-Series televisions are now on sale, but that doesn't mean Amazon will stop releasing new features. The online retailer revealed that the new televisions would support Apple's AirPlay, allowing anyone with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to simply share what's on their screens with their large, new Amazon-branded TVs.
The availability of the casting function was not specified; however, an Amazon official informed CNET that it will be "coming shortly" and "this year."
Adding AirPlay functionality to new televisions is becoming more prevalent. Many new TVs from TCL, LG, Samsung, Sony, Vizio, and other manufacturers allow AirPlay 2 screen sharing. Amazon began pushing out AirPlay and HomeKit for connectivity with Siri and the Home app to 2020 Toshiba and Insignia televisions using its Fire TV software.
Unlike rival Roku, which has integrated AirPlay compatibility on TVs running its software as well as in its own streaming players, Amazon has opted to leave AirPlay off of its streaming devices such as the Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick 4K Max, and Fire TV Cube.
Given how streaming apps have clashed with streaming platforms in the past (see Amazon's previous feud with Peacock and Roku's current feud with YouTube), it's difficult not to see the utility in having many methods to get video onto a television.
